Historic Bury ghost tours are taking place through the centre, sharing stories local legends and finishing in what has been called the town’s most haunted pub.

Geoff Morton, 40, has kick-started the ghost tours after noticing Bury was one of the few historic towns without one.

Having been on ghost tours in Edinburgh, York and London with his family, Geoff noticed most historic towns, including Rochdale had one and made the decision to bring it local.

Geoff, a trained actor who lived in Bury said: “It was a bit of a project at first, we started looking at the local legends until we reached around 10 to 15 ghost stories.

“All of them are attributed to places in and around Bury so it was a case of how do I make this really fun and interesting, so I spent a couple of months walking around, trying to find a suitable walk that we could get as many stories in as possible.”

Starting at Whitehead Gardens behind the town hall, the final route takes those brave enough onto Silver Street down to the railway station and finishes in Bury’s oldest pub.

Geoff said: “We finish at possibly one of the most haunted buildings in Bury and your ticket price also includes a drink.

“A few of these types of tours have you shuffling around in the dark for an hour and a half and you end up really cold, but finishing in the pub is a nice way to end it.”

This is the first year that the ghost tours have been run but after seeing double figures turn up for last week’s tour, it is something Geoff is considering doing even after Halloween.

He added: “ We may look to adapt it but there is no plan at the moment. It’s just something I do on top of my day job so it is time-consuming and I don’t know how relevant it’s going to be beyond Halloween.

“It includes a bit of history and some of the feedback we’ve had from guests so far is to do it without the ghost stories and just make it more historical.”

“The Rochdale one runs all the way through the year, but I don’t know whether that will be too much or if we’re just going to bring it out seasonally and update it to include different stories.”

The tour has 11 stops and 11 different stories including the dungeon on The Rock, Death at th Theatre, The Haunted Baths and The Lady in Black and The White Rabbit.

The next upcoming events are on October 21 and October 22 with slots at 6pm and 8pm.

Tickets are £10 per adult and £5 per child which is to be paid on the night, more information and later dates can be found on the Bury Ghosts Facebook page.
