A Bury DJ has teamed up with generous local businesses for a fundraising night in aid a trailblazing charity.

Alex Evans, 42, will host a Halloween party at the Broad Street Social at 8pm on Saturday, October 29, to raise money for Operation Florian, a charity run that assists fire fighters to save lives around the world.

The nationwide charity travel to countries with less developed firefighting and deliver training and equipment, and has volunteers based in Bury and Prestwich.

The DJ is the organiser of Ramshackle Radio, a monthly club night at Broad Street Social where he spins an eclectic mix of tunes spanning genres from punk to reggae.

Following the success of the event over the past year, Alex and the bar owners decided it was time to use its popularity to do some good.

Alex said: “A couple of months ago I thought ‘this is all running very nicely but it would be nice for it to actually mean something and make a difference in other ways.’

“There’s a fantastic charity called Operation Florian, I’ve known some of these guys for probably the best part of twenty years through friends.

“Not only do they make money and fundraise, they also do the hard graft as well.

“Lots of fire fighters are going to come down for this night.”

Alex has also organised a raffle and local businesses from around Bury, including Wax and Beans, Bloom Coffee and Kwoff have donated generous prizes.

He says the reaction from businesses has been “brilliant” and said he had seen “such kindness” in reaction to his idea.

Those who’d like to enter the raffle can do so on the JustGiving page Alex has set up for the event, with one entry recorded for every £1 given.

If the night is a success, Alex plans to hold further fundraising evenings for a good cause.

“[We’d like to raise] as much as possible so we can make money for the charity.”
