From the Great Wall of China to Mount Kilimanjaro, a Bury Imam is putting his best foot forward in his latest challenge to raise money for children his winter.
Father-of-six Imam Aamer Qureshi, 34, plans to scale the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon, on his own this weekend to help children in Iraq's capital city Baghdad this winter.
Having previously walked the Great Wall of China, driven an ambulance convoy from London to Islamabad, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Aamer has raised £100,000 for orphaned children and partnered with various charities.
In his latest expedition, he hopes to raise £750 to fund blankets for 150 children in Baghdad.
Aamer said: “I’m going to be climbing Mount Snowdon in Wales hopefully on Saturday this weekend.
“I’ve done Mount Kilimanjaro previously, but you do need to get back into shape again when taking on another challenge.
“It was my idea to do this as I’ve been to Baghdad previously and I noticed that in the winter it gets very cold.
“Given the local community’s financial situation, it’s very difficult to get hold of winter stocks and supplies.”
Having already beaten their original target, the new goal is to raise £750 for 150 blankets by Saturday, November 5, which will then be sent over to Iraq.
Aamer added: “It has been a bit difficult, but we’re just trying to raise as much money as we can and we’ve been trying to get some commercial sponsors too.
“We will be handing the blankets out at a popular area in Baghdad, people tend to come to the mosque and the shrine in the area so we can give them out inside or outside the building.”
Although Aamer had planned to do the climb last weekend, the weather had other plans so he is hoping Saturday stays a bit brighter.
