Thrifty Whitefield church goers have made a brilliantly untraditional nativity scene out of recycling.

An angel with badminton wings, a suitcase manger and funnel hats are just some of the amazing creations which feature in the Whitefield Methodist Church nativity.

Following the Elms St Church’s outstanding Poppy Waterfall on Remembrance Day, members of the congregation have once again showcased their creativity.

The Christmas Nativity scene, like no other, will be used for the upcoming Whitefield Nativity Festival, explaining the creation.

Rev Sally Thornton said: “With so many people having such a tough time, we wanted to reflect that ordinary everyday things, when looked at with different eyes, can become the most treasured and valued of all’.

“The simple, ordinary everyday kindnesses like giving a smile or a helping hand, can transform someone's day in an instant.”

The scene has been created especially for the free Nativity Festival launching on Wednesday, December 14 from 4pm to 7pm and running over four days.

Quirky and traditional nativity/crib sets will be displayed as well as a "Dress Up Photo Booth", craft opportunities and a visit to see Santa.

The Elms St Church nativity is made up of a number of creatively recycled items.

Rev Thornton added: “After recent roof repairs on the church, a local company kindly donated six wooden pallets which got us off to a great start to house this contemporary take on the traditional Christmas nativity.

“This fun eclectic holy family and friends started life as ordinary household items.

“Angel Gabriel started life as a fishbowl, Mary as a bucket and spanners, even the kings who came from afar reflect their outdoors; a spade, cricket bat and garden shears!

“With baby Jesus starting life in an old suitcase and mop head sheep there’s much to make you smile with.”

A remembrance tree will also be at the nativity festival for attendees to write the names of their loved ones on a bauble and then place it on the tree.

On Sunday, December 18, a nativity service for all ages will also be led by Rev Thornton in The Oasis Centre at 10.30am.
