Residents are being urged to have their say on plans to transform Bury Market and build an events "flexi hall" with new images of the proposals released.

The pictures show how the multi-million pound development, which will form a central part of wider plans to regenerate the town centre, including a new Bury Interchange and redeveloping Mill Gate Shopping Centre, could look.

The council's plans for Bury Market include a new oversailing canopy to cover and future proof the existing outdoor market and make it more attractive and visible.

A new flexi-hall that can be used for events and to support wellbeing, enterprise, education and cultural activities is set to be developed too.

A number of public consultation meetings will also take place this month when visitors can talk to the project leads and give their views on the proposals.

Drop-in sessions take place on Wednesday, January 18, Saturday, January 21 and Friday, January 27 from 10am to 2pm at the Bury Market Hall entrance foyer.

A consultation page has also been created on the council’s One Community website where people can read about the scheme, view the images and provide feedback, which will be open until Sunday, January 29.

Council leader Cllr Eamonn O’Brien said: “The plans for Bury Market are a key part of our unprecedented investment into transforming the town centre.

“Using council money, plus £20m we won from the government’s Levelling Up Fund, we aim to secure a thriving future for our much-loved market.”

Public spaces around the market such as more seating areas, greenery and better signage are set to be introduced under the plans as well.

Cllr Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy at the council, added: “Bury Market dates back to the 1440s and is rightly described as the jewel in Bury’s crown.

“With changing times, and shopping habits, it is essential that we make sure our famous and award-winning market is ready to meet the challenges of the future.

“Please take this opportunity to view the plans and give us your views on how Bury Market can flourish for many more years to come.”
