A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a crash on the M66 in Bury last night, Monday.

A crash between two cars happened just before 8pm between junction 3 for Pilsworth Interchange and junction 4 for Simister Island.

A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No other serious injuries have been reported.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene and helped officers with their investigation.

The M66 northbound was shut overnight while investigation work was carried out and reopened this morning, Tuesday, at 9am.

Long delays still remain between junction 3 and junction 4 with National Highway’s predicting delays of up to 50 minutes.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

PC Karl Horner from Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Officers and emergency services worked tirelessly to try and clear the scene and create a safe route for passengers.

"We were aware that the incident caused significant delays and I would like to thank the public for their patience.

"We would also like to appeal to any witnesses of this accident, or anyone who has dashcam footage and was driving on the M66 northbound minutes before the incident, to come forward.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement last night: "This evening on the M66 in Bury a serious road traffic collision between two cars has injured three people, one critically.

"Police, Northwest Ambulance Service, and firefighters from Blackley, Bury and Whitefield fire stations are in attendance on the motorway which is closed and is expected to be closed for several hours.

"Two people have been taken to hospital and a third person received treatment at the scene."
