A man was rescued from an overturned car on a motorway tonight, Tuesday.

Firefighters and other emergency services were called to the scene on the M66 northbound exit slip road near junction 3 for the Pilsworth Interchange at around 7.20pm.

A car had overturned with a man trapped inside, who firefighters, including crews from Bury and Heywood stations and a unit from Ashton-under-Lyne, worked quickly to free.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 7.20pm this evening, Tuesday, January 24, we received a report of a road traffic collision on the slip road of the M66 Northbound, between junctions 3 and 4, involving one vehicle that had overturned.

“The technical response unit from Ashton-under-Lyne was quickly dispatched to the scene, alongside two fire engines from Bury and Heywood fire stations.

“Firefighters worked to rescue one man from the vehicle and transfer him into the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, before handing over to Greater Manchester Police and National Highways.

“Crews were in attendance for around an hour.”

All three lanes on the section of motorway were shut as a result of the incident with drivers warned to allow extra time for their journeys.

The lanes have now been reopened.

Anyone who witnesses any kind of accident on the roads, particularly on the motorways has been urged to call the emergency services as soon as it is safe to do so on 999.
