A Bury dad has rushed to the aid of his school after "mindless vandals" smashed windows and destroyed children’s playground equipment.

Johnathan Frodsham, whose daughter and son are pupils at Chantlers Primary School, has launched a fundraiser to help it cover the cost of repairs and additional security after trespassers caused havoc on it’s grounds.

The Foulds Avenue school is being forced to install thousands of pounds of security equipment after the vandals smashed windows, threw bikes and goal posts into the school’s pond and threw eggs at the head teacher’s office window.

The school has endured an uptick in anti-social behaviour on it’s grounds in recent weeks, saying parents have become “angry and distressed".

Mr Frodsham, who is head chef at the Pavilion Bistro on Elbut Lane in Birtle, is hoping to raise £10,000 for the work, said he was concerned that the pupils’ education would be affected if the school is forced to cover the costs themselves.

He said: “The money is going to have to come out of the school’s budget at the expense of the children."

Mr Frodsham said his children have been apprehensive about returning to Chantlers and have asked him what might happen if the vandals return and smash the windows while they are sat school.Bury Times: Damaged planters at Chantlers Primary SchoolDamaged planters at Chantlers Primary School (Image: Chantlers Primary School)

He added: “My daughter has been quite distressed about it, especially the police presence around the school.

“Her classmates are very concerned and upset that this damage has been done to the school.”

Mr Frodsham says there is "only so much he can do" alone and is calling on fellow parents, carers and residents to donate what they can through his JustGiving page.

If you have any information about the vandalism at the school contact police on 101.
