Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed a man died after being hit by a lorry in Whitefield yesterday, Wednesday.

Emergency services were sent to Radcliffe New Road at around 1.30pm following a collision between a HGV and a pedestrian.

This morning, Thursday, officers said a 76-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene on Radcliffe New Road.

The 55-year-old lorry driver remained at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

No arrests have been reported.

A GMP spokesperson said: “GMP collision investigators are appealing for information after a pedestrian died in Bury.

“The 76-year-old man was in collision with an HGV lorry on Radcliffe New Road, Whitefield, at around 1.30pm on Wednesday, March 15.

“Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver remained at the scene to help police.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or believes they have any CCTV or dashcam footage, should contact GMP’s Serious Collison Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 1594-15/32023.

Radcliffe New Road was closed in both directions between Bury New Road and Dales Lane following the incident while police investigations took place.

On Wednesday, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed its crews were in attendance.

A spokesperson said: “At around 1.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday), two fire engines from Whitefield and Broughton fire station along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Radcliffe New Road, Whitefield.

“Crews arrived quickly at scene, where Greater Manchester Police are managing the incident.”
