Some of Bury's finest public art will be on display next weekend.

The Irwell Sculpture Trail Challenge will take place on Saturday, April 1, starting in Bacup near the source of the River Irwell and will finish in Media City in Salford Quays.

The challenge, run by Bury-based The Sunnywood Project, is a 33-mile endurance event that will pass by many of the artworks on the trail, which is the UK’s longest public art trail.

The event will start not far from the source of the River Irwell in Bacup, and hikers and runners will pass by artworks in Rossendale, Bury, and Salford before finally crossing the finish line in the centre of Media City.

The trail was created to connect various aspects of the Irwell Valley, including its people, heritage, parks, and countryside, using artworks placed out in the environment.

It is an excellent way for people to enjoy the beauty of the area and learn more about its rich history.

There are more than 70 pieces of artwork included in it.

Leading up to the big day, the Sunnywood team has led a six-week "sculpture tour" which has been a series of four to five miles which incorporate some of the artworks that are not directly on the trail.

It has also meant that people who may not be ready to complete a 33-mile endurance event have still been able to participate.

They have also offered the "Sculpture Seeker" challenge for families - a self-led adventure where children will be awarded a medal for seeking specific sculptures with their families.

Marc Young from The Sunnywood Project said: “I believe that this event is an excellent opportunity to showcase the enormity of the Irwell Sculpture Trail public art which is something we should be rightly proud to have pass through Bury.

“The Sunnywood Project’s charitable work involves working with disadvantaged young people in an outdoor setting.

“For example, we offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award and an education programme to support young people who struggle in school.”

All proceeds from the event will contribute to funding this youth provision.
