A community champion has been praised by colleagues for going "above and beyond" after a recent award win and nomination.

Just this month, Tesco Bury’s Wendy Howarth has won a "Going Above and Beyond" award more recently, been announced as the runner up for a "Community Hero Award".

Wendy bagged the win at the BAME Projects Wonder Woman Awards on March 8 and was announced as the runner up on March 30 at the Retail Week Awards 2023 in London.

Having played a key part in the installation "bleed kits", a dinner for a suicide prevention charity and managing charity funding, her friends and co-workers have praised her work.

Wendy said: “Helping the Bury community is something I’m passionate about, and I feel so lucky that it’s part of my job.

“We have lots of upcoming plans at the Bury store and it’s lovely to draw attention to them.”

Wendy is responsible for managing a small donation budget for community groups or events, as well as organising fundraisers and being a point of contact for charities receiving Tesco’s support.

Chris Stewart, store manager at Tesco Bury, said: “Wendy is an incredible woman, unassuming and incredibly modest about the work that she does.

“She is a natural at networking and working collaboratively across the community; there is nobody she doesn't know, from the local MP to pretty much every community group in the Bury area.

“The work Wendy does go far above and beyond what Tesco would expect and she is a credit to our company.”

Wendy received her Wonder Woman award at The Mosses Centre in which she was recognised for her campaign to install "bleed kits" in pubs and various crime hotspots to give knife crime victims the best chance of survival.

She has also co-organised the annual charity dinner for a suicide prevention charity, The Big Fandango.

Wendy said: “I’m happy to have even been considered for this award, and so proud to have won.

“It was an amazing night to be in a room with so many amazing ladies who do so much in our community to help with inclusion and diversity.”
