A man from Bury shouted racist abuse at two police officers after burgling a home and stealing a car.

Kyle Corrigan, 20, was sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday after pleading guilty to five offences, including burglary, attempted burglary, affray, theft of a vehicle and racially aggravated intentional harassment.

The court heard that Corrigan burgled an address on January 29 this year on Bridges Avenue in Bury, taking two mobile phones and a Nintendo Switch games console.

Corrigan also took the keys to the resident’s Volkswagen Sirocco and left with the vehicle.

Hugh McKee, prosecuting, told the court that Corrigan was seen in the vehicle, which was being driven around Manchester and was later found abandoned on Manchester Road, Heywood, following a collision.

The court then heard that in June 2022 Corrigan, of Mossfield Close, Bury, swore and shouted abuse at four police officers who attended his address after they received reports of a disturbance ahead of his arrest.

Mr McKee told the court that Corrigan and another man had threatened to harm the officers if they came inside the property, telling a female officer to “Taser me then".

As he was being arrested, Corrigan shouted racist slurs at two Asian officers.

John Kennerley, defending, told the court that Corrigan had shown “genuine remorse” for his crimes and that he’d had the “worst possible” start in life, having been taken into care from physically abusive parents.

He said: “The defendant is only 20 years of age and this certainly represents his first appearance in the crown court."

Addressing the judge, Recorder Michael Blakey, he added: “This will be his first sentence of any length, I'm not going to suggest that Your Honour is going to impose anything other than an immediate custodial sentence.

“I ask your honour to accept that although the defendant is 20 that does not mean he is a mature adult, he is still an immature young man.”

“Some light at the end of the tunnel, the report shows he shows genuine remorse.”

In his concluding remarks, Recorder Blakey said: “Police officers went to you home address after a report of a disturbance, they could see you standing at the window shouting abuse, you began banging at the window, you were swearing at the office.

“You’re only 20 years old and you have an appalling record.

“You’ve had an appalling back life, maybe that’s reflective of the way you act today.”

He sentenced Corrigan to two years, half of which will be spent in prison and half on licence.

He also ordered Corrigan to pay a victim surcharge.
