A Prestwich woman has celebrated a milestone birthday with a big party with friends and family.

Dorothy Edge turned 100 on May 25 and her family held a big party where the mayor, Sandra Walmsley also attended to enjoy the festivities.

Dorothy's party was held at Top O’Th Fields in Whitefield where she lives.

They have a communal lounge for residents so the party was held there so all her friends could easily attend.

Dorothy was born in Bannerman Avenue, Prestwich in 1923 and remembers having a lovely upbringing with her older sister, Hazel.

From the age of four, she lived on a farm and would have to do a two-mile walk to school each day whatever the weather.

Throughout her life, Dorothy has lived in Poynton, Reddish, Hazel Grove and Manchester before finally settling down in Whitefield in 1954.

Dorothy used to work as a seamstress but during the war years helped to manufacture war aircraft parts.

She loved to travel and jetted off to as far as South Africa in her younger years, however, she has since dedicated her life to her family.

Her granddaughter said: “Dorothy is now a great-grandma to her five great-grandchildren who love her very much.

“They are exceptionally proud and honoured to have a great grandma who is 100 years old.”

Dorothy also received her card from King Charles to commemorate the milestone.

Mayor of Bury Sandra Walmsley said: “I was delighted to join Dorothy’s surprise 100th birthday party at Top O’ Fields in Whitefield, my first official engagement since being sworn in as Mayor.

"Dorothy was thrilled to see that her family, friends, residents and staff had all turned out for the party.

"We enjoyed a sing-a-long to some classic songs with Sarah Dennis, the Veteran’s Sweetheart singer and a delicious afternoon tea.

"It was a wonderful afternoon and I wish Dorothy all the very best.”
