Two talented musicians will perform in a lunchtime concert at Bury Parish Church on Friday.

Baritone singer John Powell, from London, and Welsh pianist and organist Elin Rees will be entertaining an audience at the church at 12.30pm.

John has had a long career as a singer, both in radio choirs and as a soloist.

A member of the BBC Northern Singers and a founder member of the Britten Singers he has performed frequently on radio, TV and at major festivals including Aldeburgh, Harrogate and the Proms.

As a soloist with choral societies, he has sung a wide repertoire, ranging from Monteverdi to Tippett and contemporary music, in venues from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) to the Royal Festival Hall and numerous cathedrals.

John worked for many years at Chetham's School of Music, teaching singing and academic music as well as running the school's choirs.

Conducting choirs is central to John's work and he has been musical director of Tatton Singers since 2005.

Elin began performing and accompanying when she was very young, initially with piano and harp, beginning organ studies at 12 at Llandaff Cathedral.

She gained a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music before studying at the RNCM.

Elin has performed Krzysztof Penderecki's violin sonata as part of a duo in front of the composer, played in classes for celebrated singers including Sir John Tomlinson, Hilary Summers and Richard Stokes, and accompanied several winning RNCM vocal students in competitions.

She has performed at venues such as The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and St David's Hall in Cardiff.
