Radcliffe FC have signed former Tranmere Rovers keeper Mateusz Hewelt, writes Kieran Wilson.

The big keeper is Boro’s eighth new signing of the summer since Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley took over a the Neuven Stadium.

The 26-year-old follows Josh Hancock, Lois Maynard, Jordan Hulme, Scott Duxbury, Anthony Dudley, Matt Sargent and Jamie Morgan as the managerial duo look to shape a squad to challenge at the top end of the NPL Premier Division.

Hewelt has a wealth of experience from higher in the football pyramid, joining from League Two outfit Tranmere Rovers following the expiration of his contract where he featured on 14 occasions.

He also has NPL experience having also played for Bamber Bridge and Stafford Rangers.

Hewelt started his footballing journey with Everton, where he would feature on numerous occasions for their Under 23s.

He was almost an ever-present in David Unsworth’s Under-23s side that were crowned Premier League 2 champions in 2016/17, while also being named on the first-team bench on a handful of occasions in the absence of either Maarten Stekelenburg or Joel Robles.

He then moved onto Miedź Legnica, where he memorably scored a last-gasp equaliser against Chrobry Głogów in a 2-2 affair.

Hewelt said he is delighted to join an ambitious club.

“I’m buzzing, very happy to be here and I’m looking forward getting going,” he said. “The club is very ambitious and the gaffers have shown me what the plans are and how high we want to go.

“Hopefully I can bring with me some experience, the obvious goalkeeper traits like good kicking and keeping the ball out of the net.

“I know the league from previous loan spells and I understand what it takes to be up there and competing every week. I’m looking forward to getting another taste of it here at Radcliffe.”
