A man has suffered devastating injuries after being attacked in the centre of Bury in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency serivces were called to Silver Street in the town at around 4.25am after reports of an attack.

A man was taken to hospital where he is being treated for what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

Police are following a number of lines of enquiry and are appealing to members of the public to help find out what took place. One man has been arrested.

Detective Superintendent, Paul Rollinson of GMP’s Bury district, said: “As part of our investigation a scene is set up on Silver Street, we are collecting evidence and reviewing CCTV footage.

“Following lines of enquires, one male has already been arrested and we are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone who was in the local area and could have saw or heard anything. We are especially keen for mobile phone, CCTV or dash cam footage that may show the incident or aftermath.

“Our initial investigations point to this being an isolated incident with no threat to the wider community. Additional officers will be patrolling around the town centre, they are there to help and provide visible reassurance."

One woman who works nearby said: "I came to work at 10am and the cordon was up. The tent went up at around 10.45am."

Another woman who works nearby, said: "They have sealed off Back Broad Street and Silver Street, they have been doing forensics in two places."

One person said that bleed kits had been set up on the street in the last six to eight weeks.

Stanley's Bar, located on the same street, was struck by a fire in April this year.

Six fire crews battled the blaze which broke out starting in a bin compound near the rear.

The bar has been closed since.
