The most 'on trend' racket sport in the UK is on its way to the area after an application for planning permission was submitted.

Padel is a racket sport played in an enclosure with some elements of squash and tennis and with its origins in Acapulco, Mexico.

At the end of last week, a club called the Padel Club revealed an application for planning permission was submitted to Trafford Council for a site close to the Trafford Centre.

Its expansion to TraffordCity, which includes attractions such as skiing and skydiving already, comes after an increase in player participation at its site in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

The proposal, which includes a clubhouse and almost a dozen courts, indoors and outdoors, costs £2 million and creates 15 jobs for the area, according to the Padel Club.

Its chief executive Kristopher Ball said: "We are delighted to be establishing our new Padel Club at this location in Trafford City. 

"We are launching a new sport into to a destination that is thriving already."

James Whittaker, director of development at landowner Peel L&P, said: "TraffordCity is the UK’s foremost retail, leisure and commercial destination and we are proud to be working in partnership with the Padel Club to serve up this experience to our TraffordCity community.

"From skiing and sky diving to snowboarding and golf, TraffordCity is the only destination in the UK to offer all of these activities in one place and we are excited to be able to add Padel to our mix of sport and social experiences whilst supporting job creation within our local community."

Also under consideration by Trafford Council is a proposal for £250 million water park and wellness spa Therme Manchester which was submitted to the authority last month.

If approved the construction on these schemes is set to start this year.
