A man threatened his mum with a knife in her home in Bury during a "frightening" act of violence.

Anthony McAndrew's mum went to a restaurant on June 17 this year before she and another family member began to receive abusive text messages.

Prosecutor John Kennerley told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court that McAndrew was sending abusive messages to his mum and demanded money from her.

The family went back to her home in Bury before McAndrew arrived at the house uninvited and kicked down the door which smashed into the wall, the court heard.

He walked past his mum while carrying cans of lager and when she asked him to leave he swore.

He appeared to have been drinking and was very upset and shouting abuse, the court was told.

McAndrew, of Mather Street, Radcliffe, then walked into the kitchen where he grabbed a knife and started cutting his own tracksuit, Mr Kennerley said.

His mum then fled into the garden with another family member where McAndrew cornered them.

McAndrew then used the knife to cut across his teeth and held it near to his throat while swearing and saying he had nothing to lose.

Other family members managed to intervene and physically removed the knife from McAndrew before calling police.

McAndrew then went back inside the kitchen and started smashing bottles before police arrived and arrested him.

At first he was compliant with officers but he became abusive in the police van and urinated inside it.

He was interviewed the next day and made no comment throughout.

In a victim impact statement, the mum said that she was so scared that she now locks all the windows and doors in her house in fear that McAndrew could come back.

She added: “I feared for my safety and family, when he’s out he will come back with a bang.”

McAndrew pleaded guilty to committing criminal damage and affray.

Neil Ronan, defending, said McAndrew has a deep sense of remorse for his actions and realises how stupid and irrational he behaved and is embarrassed by his actions.

He has shown insight and understanding that alcohol was a key feature of his behaviour that day.

Addressing McAndrew, Judge Matthew Corbett-Jones said: “What you did that day was very frightening for your mother.

“You only intended to harm yourself, but you accept your actions caused considerable fear to your family.”

McAndrew was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He is also required to attend 30 days of rehabilitation activity days.
