An amateur theatre company in Bury will stage its interpretation of a classic West End production this autumn.

All Saints Elton Theatre Company will take to the stage in October with its production of Blood Brothers – The Play, based on the musical by Lancashire playwright, Willy Russell.

A modern tragedy set in Liverpool between the 1960s and the 1980s, Blood Brothers tells the fateful tale of twins separated at birth, against a vivid backdrop of social change.

The story is set as Mrs Johnstone, a working class mother who is struggling to support a large family, discovers she is expecting twins.

Fearful whether she will be able to cope with extra mouths to feed, Mrs Johnstone is reluctantly convinced to give up one of the twins to her wealthy employer, the coercive Mrs Lyons, who is unable to have children of her own.

But as the two women strike their bargain, little do they realise the tragic ripple effects this haunting secret will have across the generation.

A coming-of-age tale exploring themes of social inequality, friendship and fate, Blood Brothers is a charged emotional drama.

Co-directors Andy Milthorpe and Rebecca Foster said: “This exciting and thought-provoking play, written by Willy Russell, takes the audience on a journey throughout the late 20th Century.

"Each character, portrayed excellently by our members, is faced with themes and issues surrounding social class, nature versus nurture, friendship and loyalty.

“Our cast have worked extremely hard to fully establish the key characteristics and language used- you are in for a sensational and emotional journey.”

All Saints Elton Theatre Company was established in 1912 and has a long history of bringing the community together to stage high-quality drama and musical theatre. Earlier this year, they performed the much-loved musical Guys and Dolls at The Met, Bury.

The company also has a thriving youth theatre group, which launched in August 2022 for children aged six to 16.

Blood Brothers - The Play will be staged at All Saints House, Orrell Street, Bury, BL8 1PB from Thursday, October 12 – to Saturday, October 14 on 7pm nightly as well as a 2pm Saturday matinee show.
