A Bury woman is hoping to raise ‘as much as she can’ to thank the cancer charity which has been supporting her dad.

Jacqui McCarthy, 52, has organised a charity football match in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support after her dad, Derek was diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago.

Jacqui says the charity has supported both her dad and her mum through difficult times and says she now wants to raise as much money as she can to support their work.

The teaching assistant raised close to £1,200 at a charity skydive to further support the work of the charity.

The football match will take place at Bacup FC and will see The Phoenix take on Jet2 TV All Stars, a special team featuring actors from Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Jacqui said: “Al the money is going to Macmillan, when I asked Dad where he wanted the money to go, he said Macmillan because they’ve supported him all the way.”

All as well organising the match, Jacqui has secured signed raffle prizes from Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs, and is calling on anyone else who can help to donate a prize.

She’s also looking to organise bouncy castles for children to enjoy as well as the match.

“I want it to be a fun family day out,” she said. “I want to make it a fun day, it’s not just going to be a football match.

“I’ve not set any target for the match, I just want to raise as much as I can as I think every little helps.

“Every bit goes toward buying something for someone with cancer.”

Following his diagnosis, Derek has recently undergone surgery at Whythenshaw Hospital and hopes raising money for Macmillan will acknowledge the work of both the staff and the charity.

“They’ve been a fantastic support for my mum and dad and they’ve helped them a lot, I just want to give something back.”

The event takes place on Sunday 12th May 2024 at Bacup FC. For further information, contact Jacqui on 07572 938750.
