A large number of emergency services were seen in attendance at the River Roch this evening to assist with the rescue of a person from the water.

Residents nearby said they had seen several fire engines, police officers, ambulances, and a police helicopter in the area.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at around 5.15pm to the water near Newby Close, Bury.

Fire engines from Bolton North and Farnworth, the technical rescue units from Ashton and Leigh and the specialist water incident unit from Heywood were in attendance for two and a half hours.

They have now been stood down for tonight.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 5.15pm on Saturday 18 November, fire crews were called to assist with the rescue of a person from water near Newby Close, Bury.

“Fire engines from Bolton North and Farnworth, the technical response units from Ashton and Leigh, and the specialist water incident unit from Heywood were quickly mobilised to the scene.”

GMFRS confirmed crews had been stood down for tonight after spending almost three hours searching the area.

Earlier this evening, Cllr Tamoor Tariq said: “Following reports from an eye witness there is a huge emergency services presence, including GMP, ambulance and fire services, including a police helicopter over the area for some time.

“A vulnerable person is being rescued from the River Roch, please give the emergency the time and space to do their job.

“Everything suggests this is an isolated incident. I know everyone will be praying for the safety of the individual concerned.”
