A drone was sent into the area shielded by firefighters.

No smoke was visible from the scene as the public were not permitted to past the junction of Lord Street and Rochdale Road.

The incident was still going at 12pm but by 3pm, firefighters started to leave.

An update from GMFRS said: “A spokesman for GMFRS said: "While GMFRS and other agencies remain at the scene, most crews have now left as the risk of escalation is low.

“We will carry out periodic temperature checks inside the furnace while we continue to make the building safe.”

Another eyewitness said: “It’s a bit busy this morning, but I did see something was going on.

“Looks like a fire but I can’t see any smoke or anything.

“I’m assuming they’re containing it, but we only came out to get a few things for the dog.

“There was a woman who went under the cordon, and they ran after her to stop her.”
