A man has been arrested and charged after police found a suspected gun during a house search.

Officers say they first arrested a man in connection with a fraud cause on Vernon Road, Greenmount on Thursday, January 18.

On searching a house on the road, the officers found what they believe to be a gun and the next day a man was charged with possessing a firearm.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Officers searched the property under section 18 PACE and officers discovered a suspected firearm inside the property.

“The firearm was soon confirmed as a prohibited weapon and a 41-year-old man was further arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.”

People in the area reported seeing police officers on the scene for around "20 hours" between Thursday, January 18 and Friday, January 19.

According to one eyewitness, three tactical vehicles and two police vans were seen on the road, while officers were also seen searching bins and gardens in the area.

Officers have now confirmed that Liam Anthony Howarth, 41, of Vernon Road, Greenmount, has been charged with possession of a firearm.

They say that the fraud allegations are still being investigated.

Howarth has appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court this morning, Saturday January 20.
