A man has been arrested after being accused of driving a van under the influence of cannabis among other vehicle offences.

Police officers said they noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from a white Transit van on Halvard Avenue in Moorside and checks were then made.

Police reported that the van was not insured, that the man driving only held a provisional licence and that he tested positive for cannabis.

The van was also "notified off-road" and was seized, police said.

A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and police said he will appear in court.

A Bury police spokesperson said: “Moorside officers were driving down Halvard Avenue in Bury when we were alerted to a strong smell of cannabis.

“The police vehicle was turned around and it became apparent that the smell of cannabis was coming from a white Transit van.

“Checks revealed that the van was notified off-road and so the van was seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

“Further checks revealed the male seen driving the van was not insured and only held a provisional licence.

“To add to this, he also tested positive for cannabis.

“The male was arrested under section 5A of the Road Traffic Act for driving while unfit through drink or drugs and will be summonsed to court for no insurance and driving on a provisional licence.”
