But due to the location in an multiple occupancy industrial unit there was a risk of it spreading.
A total of six units from Whitefield, Bury, Bolton, Farnworth, Manchester Central and Rochdale were sent to the scene.
But the first attenders from Whitefield and Bury prevented it from spreading.
The blaze was brought under control by around 10.30pm.
Crew manager Clive Hopkinson, from the Whitefield fire station, said: "We were called at about 9.15pm.
"It was at a unit of multiple occupancy so it had potential to spread.
"The key point to stress is that the initial actions of Whitefield and Bury attended and stopped it being a catastrophe."
Crews remain on the scene.
The crew manager added: "A decision will be made at 9.30am about what to do.
"They are going over and dampening potential hot spots."
