Those attending the Oasis Heaton Park shows have been thanked by the region’s mayor for "creating something quite special".

Andy Burnham said "everybody’s really brought joy to the whole thing" and revealed that Liam and Noel Gallagher and the rest of the band "are really made up with it".

Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester’s "In The Hotseat" phone-in, the metro mayor said that despite some transport delay issues for visiting music fans "the atmosphere has been brilliant".

“The shows have been off the scale,” he added.

“I’d like to thank everyone who’s been because they’ve created something quite special. Those attending have made this a moment for Manchester, I think people will remember it forever.

“We had the Manchester sun for the big homecoming, Pep Guardiola in the crowd. It was something quite special.

“Everybody’s really brought joy to the whole thing. From what I know the band is really made up with it.”

Mr Burnham also spoke about the boarding up of an area near "Gallagher Hill" from which thousands of ticketless fans enjoyed a view of the stage from around half an mile away at last weekend’s two shows.

Hoardings were erected to block views ahead of Wednesday’s concert.

He said: “It wasn’t my decision but obviously they’ve got to manage the perimeter like any event. But I think people were still there on Wednesday night.”

Mr Burnham said the shows had crossed the generations with music lovers of all ages attending.

He said: “It was like the Stone Roses in 2012.

“You’ve got people like me in their 50s who inflicted Oasis and the Stone Roses on the kids during the school run all those years ago.

“Now those kids are 20 and 30-something, so we’ve had the generations attending together – it was just celebratory.”

He acknowledged some transport issues had occurred, including at Victoria tram stop where fans were subject to prolonged delays.

He said: “There were a few delays on the transport on the Friday night but these are big events and TfGM, Manchester and Bury councils and Greater Manchester Police have put a lot of hard work in and don’t get the credit.

“I think things have functioned reasonably well. “Not perfectly – but so far, so good.”

Oasis complete their five shows at the park on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 with more than 150,000 expected to attend across the two days.
