The council has warned drivers to “expect delays” after one lane of a busy road has been closed due to “multiple” gas leaks.
Emergency work is being carried out by Cadent on Water Street in Radcliffe, close to the Hampson Street junction, and will remain closed “until work is complete”.
It comes after multiple leaks were detected in the gas pipe beneath the road and work is being carried out to “protect residents and ensure the continued safe supply of gas”.
Three excavations and camera surveys have already been completed but “further investigation is needed.”
A spokesperson for Cadent apologised for the disruption caused.
Bury Council have urged drivers to “allow more time and consider alternative routes where possible” particularly at busy times.
Chris Campbell, customer operations area manager (north west) at Cadent said: “We apologise for the delays and disruption caused by our emergency gas work on Water Street.
“We’ve detected multiple leaks in the gas pipe beneath the road, with several sections requiring repair - some needing specialist teams and machinery.

"We have taken actions which keep everything safely under control. We are bringing in specialised equipment to accelerate excavation and minimise further disruption.
“For safety reasons, the lane will remain closed until the work is complete. This is essential to protect residents and ensure the continued safe supply of gas.
“If you smell gas, please call the national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.
“It may not be related to this work and must be investigated.”
