A cat who has been missing for 16 years has been found in a Bury park this week - but is now in need of a new forever home.

Ruby, a 20-year-old ginger cat, was spotted in Clarence Park off Walmersley Road by a member of the public and taken to Armac vets on The Rock.

They discovered that she was chipped and managed to find her owners, who were “overjoyed” to learn that she was ok after being missing for such a long time.

Sadly, their personal circumstances had changed since Ruby vanished more than a decade and a half ago, meaning that they could no longer offer her a home.

They agreed to sign her over to a cat rescue group and Ruby is now being fostered by volunteers.

Chantelle Farrow, who began Kitty Rescue Bury in 2017, is appealing for help to find out if anyone in the area has been taking care of Ruby since she went missing so they can learn more about her background.

She said: “Ruby is 20 years old so needs lots of love and care right now.

“She has come into foster with us and is such a lovely, happy cat, getting lots of attention and treats.

“With her age, we don't know how long she has left but we will spoil her. We want to try find out what happened to Ruby in those 16 years.

“We know that someone may have been caring for her and they may now be worried but we also feel if someone was caring for her, they could have checked her for a chip, so the family didn't have to go so long without knowing what happened.

“Without knowing the facts though, we can't make judgement. We would just like whoever cared for her to come forward so we can talk to them and find out more about Ruby.

“There could be so many scenarios – maybe someone cared for her then passed away, maybe she went missing from them or maybe they moved house?

“There are so many possibilities - if only Ruby could talk and tell us herself! The main thing in that she is safe, loved and cared for now.”
