Bury Council is warning the public about three big roadwork projects planned for later in 2026 that motorists should begin to plan for.

The authority has issued a webpage for upcoming works, which sets out when drivers can expect disruption across the borough.

It includes three projects where delays are likely to be felt, with temporary traffic lights, lane closures, and full road closures part of the plans.

They form council proposals to install and upgrade road facilities, including installing new crossings, resurfacing roads, or introducing solar-powered stud lighting along paths in a park.

The first set of works will take place on Manchester Road and Gigg Lane between June and July, with the second set of works along Manchester Road and Parkhills Road in July, August and September.

OTHER TRAFFIC NEWS:

The third set of works is around Openshaw Park and the Roch Valley Greenway across two weeks in winter 2026.

Below are details for each of the three projects.

Manchester Road/Gigg Lane

The council says five weeks of roadworks across June and July will lead to lane closures of Manchester Road, two-way temporary traffic lights, and the full road closure at the junction of Gigg Lane and Manchester Road.

A new signalised crossing, an uncontrolled drop crossing, and a raised road table will be installed along the road, alongside resurfacing works.

Providing some important information on the works, the authority said: "Before works start, we will install advance warning signs at the roadside.

"If a full road closure is required, a diversion route will be clearly signed.

"Access to local businesses will be maintained on weekdays and Saturdays."

Manchester Road and Parkhills Road

This project will take place between July and September, with new features being installed across the first two months, and overnight road resurfacing planned in September.

The council says a new signalised crossing will be installed, alongside the resurfacing, and warned drivers to expect lane closures, two-way temporary traffic lights, and overnight closures to resurface Parkhills Road, Radcliffe Road, and Heaton Fold.

These resurfacing road closures, which will take place in September, will take three nights.

Providing important information, the authority said: "Before works start, we will install advance warning signs at the roadside.

"Diversion routes will be clearly signed. Access to local businesses will be maintained on weekdays and Saturdays."

Roch Valley Greenway

Work on the Roch Valley Greenway is expected to take two weeks across winter 2026 and will lead to solar-powered stud lighting installed along paths in Openshaw Park and the greenway.

The authority has not set out details of this scheme of works yet, but has listed it on its advanced warnings for future projects so residents are aware of potential future disruption.
