A four-legged member of staff is helping make school a happier place at a Bury school.

Three-year-old cockapoo Riley has become a permanent fixture at Holly Mount Primary R.C School in Bury, where she supports the emotional, social, and academic development of pupils through daily interaction.

Eleanor England, headteacher, said: "Riley has grown up with our school community, and the bond she has formed with our pupils, especially our SEND children, is extraordinary.

"Her calm nature, paired with her playful personality, brings comfort, confidence, and joy.

"She is an invaluable part of our wellbeing provision."

Riley joined the school as an eight-week-old puppy and has since become an integral part of school life.

Her presence has been particularly beneficial to pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), with staff noting improvements in emotional regulation, communication, confidence, attendance, and engagement.

Her daily routine includes providing emotional support during moments of anxiety, joining reading and nurture groups, and helping pupils build confidence through gentle, structured interactions.

Pupils describe Riley as "comforting," "kind," and "very silly".

A parent praised Riley’s calming influence during the morning drop-off.

They said: "Every morning, Riley greets the pupils at the gate, ready to welcome them in.

"She instantly creates a sense of calm.

"For so many families, including ours, she makes coming into school easier and helps the transition feel smoother and far less stressful."

Mrs. England worked closely with behaviour specialists to ensure Riley met the standards required for working safely in a primary school setting.

Riley follows a dedicated wellbeing programme designed to support pupils in a safe, purposeful, and carefully supervised manner.

She regularly spends time in the school’s Wellbeing Hub and is often spotted in the office looking for a treat.

Riley’s ongoing presence at Holly Mount reflects the school’s commitment to supporting every aspect of pupils’ development and wellbeing.
