Bolton Sixth Form students take part in Apprentice style project

Young people would certainly give Lord Sugar's apprentices a run for their money when they took part in a series of tasks.

For the had a taste of life outside the lecture theatre when they worked on projects set by professionals.

Students at The Sixth Form Bolton brought ideas to life during their 'live brief' week giving first-year students the chance to work on real-world projects set by industry partners across a wide range of subjects.

Students were tasked with applying their classroom knowledge to professional challenges, developing practical skills in communication, teamwork, and project delivery.

Charlotte Senior, a first-year A-level art, craft and design, English language and sociology student, said: "I took part in the Art, Craft and Design brief set by Bolton Museum.

"I enjoyed working on the brief and turning our plans into reality.

"It is crazy how a simple idea can turn into an actual product.

"It was a very high effort week, but I'm proud of what I produced and look forward to showing my work to others."

Art, craft and design students collaborated with Bolton Museum to design gift products inspired by the museum’s zoology collections, with some creations selected for production and sale.

Fine art, design and communications students contributed artwork to the Put Big Light On festival, helping to design its official thank you card.

Photography students completed a professional assignment for Lancashire Sinfonia, producing promotional images for use on its website and marketing materials.

Politics and religious studies students partnered with Asda and Bolton Council on the Build a Better Bolton challenge, developing campaigns to improve community cohesion with a focus on research and stakeholder engagement.

Maths students worked on a national security brief from MBDA, devising cost-effective and sustainable drone interception solutions.

Drama and performing arts students worked with the Octagon Theatre to design set concepts for a fictional production.

A-level science students tackled real-world problems through a STEM project with SUEZ, while PE and sport science students designed an event to boost youth physical activity in Bolton.

Other briefs included media production tasks set by Bolton Council’s new Film Office; IT students creating websites for a real client; and psychology, sociology and criminology students analysing a complex case study through an NHS-led workshop.

Christine Baldwin, community life champion at Asda, said: "I enjoyed working with an exceptionally talented group of students and was so proud of the presentation and project that was presented to the panel."

The Sixth Form Bolton also extended its thanks to all the industry representatives who contributed their time and expertise.
