National Highways has warned drivers of three overnight closures planned for the M66 and M60 this weekend as improvement works continue at Simister Island.
The closures are needed to allow the first phase of gantry removal at M60 junction 18, with the existing structures being replaced as part of the updated junction layout.
Sections of the M66 will be closed overnight between junctions 3 and 4 from Friday, July 31, to Monday, August 3, with diversion routes in place.
National Highways has confirmed details of the closures via social media.
In a post on Facebook, National Highways said: "We're carrying out improvement works at M60 J18 (Simister Island).
"This weekend we're starting the first phase of gantry removal.
"The existing gantries have reached the end of their operational life and will be replaced by new ones designed around the updated junction layout."
The overnight closures are scheduled as follows:
Friday, July 31, 9pm to Saturday, August 1, 7am;
Saturday, August 1, 9pm to Sunday, August 2, 7am;
Sunday, August 2, 9pm to Monday, August 3, 6am.
During these periods, the M66 southbound will be closed between junctions 3 and 4, including the junction 3 entry slip road.
The M66 northbound will also be closed between junctions 4 and 3, including the M60 clockwise link road to the M66 northbound and the junction 4 northbound entry slip road.
For southbound traffic, drivers will be diverted via Pilsworth Road, Moss Hall Road and Queen Elizabeth Way to Heywood Interchange, before joining the M62 westbound and leaving at junction 18.
Northbound motorists will be diverted from the M60 anticlockwise at junction 18 onto the M62 eastbound, exiting at junction 19 before following Queen Elizabeth Way and Pilsworth Road back to M66 junction 3.
National Highways has urged motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during the overnight closure periods.
Drivers travelling through the Simister Island area this weekend are therefore advised to check their routes before setting off and expect delays.
