Extra stop-and-search powers are in effect in Rochdale after reports of youths carrying weapons and the stabbing of a 13-year-old boy.
Greater Manchester Police have enforced Section 60 and Section 60AA powers in designated areas across the town centre.
The powers began at 3pm on Sunday, August 30, and will remain in place for 24 hours until 3pm on Monday, August 31.
Section 60 powers allow officers to stop and search people in the specified area. Officers can also require people to remove face coverings.
The powers were introduced after reports of youths carrying weapons in the area and an incident near the Riverside Shopping Centre.
A boy, aged 13, was stabbed during a serious assault on Saturday, August 29. He is in hospital receiving treatment.
Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of a bladed article. They remain in custody for questioning.
GMP said officers were enquiring to identify others who may have been involved.
There will be an increased police presence in Rochdale town centre during the Bank Holiday weekend.
Officers will patrol the area on Monday to reassure residents.
Chief Inspector Michael Barton, Neighbourhoods lead for GMP’s Rochdale district, said: “We want to assure the people of Rochdale that we are fully committed to locating the offenders involved in the disturbing events that unfolded in our town centre last night.
“Our dedicated team of detectives, led by senior investigating officers, is working tirelessly to piece together the full story of the serious assault and the wider disorder that occurred.
“Already, two individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody for questioning.
"While our investigation is still in its early stages, we are exploring every possible lead to ensure that everyone involved is identified and held accountable.
“Our detectives are diligently reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness statements, and analysing all available intelligence. We are determined to bring those responsible to justice and restore peace to our community.”
Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt added: “This was a serious and sustained attack that could have had far more tragic consequences.
"Our team of experienced detectives is working around the clock to understand exactly what happened, identify all those involved, and secure the strongest possible evidence.
“We will relentlessly pursue every lead available to us and will leave no stone unturned in bringing all those responsible before the courts.
"Community safety remains our absolute priority, and we are committed to ensuring those who seek to bring violence onto our streets are held fully accountable for their actions.”
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, was in Rochdale town centre at the time, or has mobile phone, CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact them.
