THE CHOIR at All Saints Church in Whitefield has always been top notch, but the same now cannot be said for its members’ attire, which organisers say predates the Vietnam war and even the last time England lifted the World Cup.

Director of music Mike Smith said he is delighted with a recent transformation of the choir, but he is now on a quest to smarten them up, replacing their cassocks that first worn in 1964.

He is holding a sponsored organ recital at the church, in Church Lane, at 5pm on October 26, titled Entente Cordiale and featuring the works of renowned composers of the past John Stanley, Andrew Fletcher and Louis Vierne. Entry is £5.

Mike said: “The cassocks are becoming a little tatty around the edges and changing colour. They were purchased in 1964, being first worn on Easter Sunday. After 44 years of dedicated service, it is now time for them to depart in peace.”

He added: “Things have moved on musically in the last 15 months here. The repertoire of the choir has expanded, the standard of singing has improved and choral evensong continues to be popular.” To find out more about joining the choir or to sponsor Mike, call 01204 57 7780.
