TWO elderly people foiled bogus workmen who tried to claim money for work they had not done.

An 85-year-old woman was approached by a man on Monday, November 17 claiming he had completed work on the guttering of her home in Grindsbrook Road, Radcliffe. The woman refused to pay him, so the man left empty-handed. He was described as white, aged in his early 30s, height around 6ft. On the same day, an 87-year-old man in St Peter’s Road, Bury, told police that a man had demanded money for work he claimed to have done on his roof.

The victim asked the man tocome back with an official estimate and registered bill.

The man was described as white, aged in his 50s, stocky, around 5ft 6ins tall, with chubby cheeks and dark hair. Although descriptions of the two men are different, police have not ruled out the incidents are linked.

Detective Inspector John Mazzolai, of Bury Police, said: “Any legitimate caller will happily provide identification and an official bill for their work.”
