BALLOT papers are now landing on doormats for the biggest referendum of its kind in Greater Manchester.

Around 1.9 million packs have been posted to residents across the conurbation, asking if people support the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) bid and its associated congestion charge.

Residents have exactly two weeks to return their papers by the December 11 deadline, with the result announced the following day.

Each pack contains a ballot paper, a declaration which must be signed by the voter, and a leaflet giving information about the TIF proposals.

If approved, the scheme will provide nearly £3 billion for investment in public transport, with £1.2 billion of it raised through a congestion charge operating on weekday peak times through two charging rings around the city.

Anyone who has not received a ballot pack by the weekend should call the Returning Officer’s free helpline on 0800 7839828.
