Although he titled his talk Jazz Goes To College Peter Hardman could very well have could have chosen Jazz Comes Out of College for he explored two aspects of jazz on the campuses.

He played tracks of professional outfits that visited USA colleges, but he also played the music of the student bands from the colleges.

From the pro bands we heard the Ray Anthony Orchestra (One O’clock Jump) and the Dave Brubeck Quartet (The Song Is You). A Gerry Mulligan group played There Will Never Be Another You at the Hoover High School in San Diego and the Four Freshmen along with the Stan Kenton band did the same tune at Butler University. Peter even found a UK group directed by Bobby Lamb playing at the London Trinity College (Stone Canyon).

Peter chose a variety of college bands playing what they call ‘stage band music’; music that is upbeat, modern with an emphasis on a brass-ensemble sound.

From Texas we heard the Jazz Camp Big Band (The Chicken) and the North Texas State College (Hello Young Lovers). Berklee, Boston, played the bluesy East Wind and the teenage Newport Youth band tore into Lemon Drop. There was a brilliant trumpet duet from New York’s Eastman Jazz Ensemble, further great brass work from North Colorado University (Jazz Hoot), great guitar from Ohio University (Stella By Starlight) and California State played Time Lies.

Peter’s survey had shown that the USA campuses are producing some very exciting musicians. HI
