LEAVING Garstang, we passed the ruins of Greenhalgh Castle. Little remains of this late 15th century structure, built by the 1st Earl of Derby soon after he became Lord of the Manor of our local area.

Later we reached Calder Vale, an attractive former mill village where someone asked if we had seen a lost, brown chicken.

Later still we climbed Nicky Nook, a strange name for a hill. Only a small hill but with excellent views of Morecambe Bay, Black Combe and the Lake District mountains, the weather being clear and sunny.

With no more climbing we made good progress back to Garstang well before dark.

On Sunday, November 30, Harry Waddington (01282 615418) leads an 11-mile moderately strenuous walk to White Moor from Barrowford. Meet at Bury Interchange car park at 9am.
