BROAD Oak pupils were shown the Olympian spirit when Ed Clancy presented them with prizes.

The Beijing gold medal cyclist attracted an audience of more than 200 at the Elizabethan Suite in Bury Town Hall.

Ed, a member of Great Britain’s team pursuit champions, was accompanied by his coach Matt Parker.

The evening was to mark personal bests and achievements of pupils, now in Year 11 at the specialist sports college, for their work in the previous year.

Some 35 awards were made to them, while former pupils also received their GCSE certificates following record-breaking results for the school this year.

Also, International Young Leaders Awards went to six pupils who represented the school in February on a visit to Siberia, organised as part of a British Council educational/cultural exchange.
