A SECOND Bury police officer has received major recognition for an outstanding contribution to the criminal justice system.

Detective Constable Kim Steele, from the vulnerable adult section, won a commendation in the local version of the national Criminal Justice Awards.

Last month, the Bury Times featured fellow officer Steve Orr who was highly commended in the national awards held in London.

At the local ceremony, DC Steele received her commendation for an award in the “outstanding achievement in caring for victims” category.

Superintendent Peter Scofield, who made the nomination, said she displayed “extraordinary effort” in dealing with a very sensitive sexual abuse case in the Asian community.

He added: “Over a two-year period, Kim conducted a difficult and sensitive investigation and supported a traumatised victim throughout the prosecution. Her diligence and tenacity resulted in the conviction of a sex offender, and prevented him from victimising other young girls.”

Her work on this case also won DC Steele a Chief Constable’s commendation.
