POLICE chiefs are launching a month-long amnesty for people who have lied about having valuables stolen.
They have given an assurance that those who come forward will not be prosecuted for wasting police time.
The amnesty has been launched so police can cut the amount of time spent on “wild goose chases”.
Greater Manchester Police has set up a freephone number for people to call if they have made a false report in the past.
Officers estimate that around one in 10 reports of crimes where property has been taken could be false.
Det Chief Insp Dean Fraser said: “Through this campaign, we want to deter people from wasting our time investigating false reports.” People can own up by calling 0800 731 9431.
