AN Unsworth woman who helped to deliver thousands of babies during 31 years as a midwife has died.

Mrs Sophia Kealey died at Fairfield Hospital after a short illness. A funeral service was held at St Bernadette’s RC Church, Bury, last Friday.

Mrs Kealey had lived in Cunningham Drive, Unsworth. She was 81 and leaves four sons, a daughter, stepdaughter and 10 grandchildren.

Originally from Donegal, Mrs Kealey trained at Withington and Sharoe Green hospitals and undertook district training in the course of becoming a midwife. She was a member of the Royal College of Midwives.

She was a night sister at Fairfield Hospital for three years and also served at Crumpsall Hospital, now North Manchester General. In 1964, she took charge of the Sunny Bank, Hollins and Unsworth area as district midwife and was well known throughout these areas.
