DANNY Boyle plans to plough “significant” profits back into the Mumbai slums that were the subject of his smash-hit film, Slumdog Millionaire.
The Oscar-nominated film director, from Radcliffe, said people should not see his plans as a PR stunt.
Slumdog Millionaire’s rags-to-riches tale, which has stormed Hollywood, winning a clutch of awards, including a Golden Globe, has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture. But there has been protest in some quarters over the film’s portrayal of slum life.
In an interview with The Times, Boyle insisted that the fund was not being set up in response to criticism.
He said: “This is our chance to give something back to an extraordinary city, which has helped us produce an extraordinary film.”
Boyle said discussions would take place very shortly on how to set up and distribute a fund for children.
