CARING pupils at a Bury school have helped to save the lives of two children from an orphanage in Kenya.

Money raised by children at Guardian Angels RC Primary School was used to pay for hospital treatment for two youngsters who were seriously ill.

Although doctors expected the children to die, they are both recovering well and have returned to the orphanage.

Pupils at the school, in Leigh Lane, Elton, raised £1,800 by holding a disco, cake sale, craft club and sponsored silence.

They also donated old school uniforms and football shirts for children at the orphanage to wear.

The school has close links to the Good Life Orphanage, which is run by former Bury couple Kevin and Mary Maguire, who were parishioners at Guardian Angels RC Church.

In an email to Father Paul Cannon, the couple wrote: “That money actually saved two children’s lives. We thank the children from Guardian Angels from the bottom of our hearts.”

Headteacher Dennis Harrison said: “It was fantastic to raise so much money, especially as we were only aiming for £500.

“It’s great to know that the money has had a real impact on the lives of these children. We are all very proud.”
