SUPERMARKET staff got a soaking to raise cash for a leading cancer charity.

Managers at the Tesco Metro store in Irwell Street, Ramsbottom, raised £1,080 for Marie Curie when they went in the stocks.

Manager Mark Linley and staff member Anthony Mylrea had wet sponges thrown at them by fellow employees and shoppers throughout the day.

Charity co-ordinator Tracey Fielding said: “We were challenged to raise £1,000 over the weekend and it was fantastic because we thought we weren’t going to do it at one point.

“The staff made a fantastic contribution; they were really enthusiastic but I think the doormen got more of a soaking than the manager!”

Marie Curie Cancer Care is Tesco’s 2008 charity of the year — a charity for 2009 is due to be selected.
