THE Composer Conducts was the title of the programme presented to the Bury & District Recorded Music Circle by Betty Seddon, a member of the Swinton Society.

Betty opened with the Overture Candide by Bernstein, followed by Bachianas Brazileiras No 5 by Villa-Lobos; the Suite from Henry V by Walton; the 23rd Psalm from Rutter’s Requiem Mass; Farewell to Stromness by Maxwell Davies; the Finale of George Lloyd’s 6th Symphony; Simple Symphony by Britten; Four Old American Songs by Copeland and to end, Three Dances by Malcolm Arnold, English Dances No 3 and 5 and Polka. These were used in the Ballet Solitaire, the latter being specially written for the occasion.

The items played were written and conducted by the composer apart from Farewell to Stromness where Maxwell Davies played his composition on the piano.

Betty was thanked for a very tuneful and entertaining programme and received the applause from an appreciative audience.

Next Friday David Woolsey will present Land of Ice and Sagas.
