THE heartbroken family of a Tottington woman, who died from cancer two years ago, have ensured her memory lives on.
Sandra Walker lost her 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer in 2007 after earlier embarking on a fundraising mission to buy a £70,000 scanner for North Manchester General Hospital.
When the 46-year-old died, she had already collected £7,000 and her family pledged to take the total to £10,000 by pressing ahead with a fundraising evening she had arranged.
Now, virtually all the money has been used to buy North Manchester General Hospital a nephroscope, used for pancreatic surgery, together with thee pairs of specialist glasses for surgeons.
Mrs Walker’s mother and father, Lily and Joe Heywood, and sister, Catherine Forrest, presented the medical equipment to hospital representatives.
The remaining £1,600 was split evenly to provide donations for Bury Hospice and Bury Cancer Support Centre.
After being diagnosed in April 2006, Mrs Walker was given just two weeks to live. But she underwent a bypass operation and six weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy to fight the disease and give herself more time. Sadly, she lost her fight for life in the Christie Hospital in September, 2007.
Mrs Heywood, of Harwood Crescent, Tottington, said: “After my daughter died, we decided to go ahead with the final fundraising event which she had arranged. Sandra was very committed to her fundraising. I was so very proud of her and she was such a brave person.”
