David Nuttall, the Prospective Conservative M.P. for Bury North, has welcomed Local Newspaper Week as a means of highlighting the importance of local news to towns and villages like Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington.
David said: "Thriving local newspapers play a vital role in the Community. Unfortunately, due to the economic recession causing a reduction in advertising, many newspapers are struggling to survive and the whole industry has seen cutbacks not just here in Bury but across the Country.
He added "The Conservatives have made proposals to help local newspapers. Firstly, the merger regulations which currently prevent consolidation between papers should be relaxed. Secondly, the media ownership rules that prevent local newspapers expanding into other media platforms must also be relaxed."
"These two changes need to happen together in order to allow newspaper groups to develop a business model that is equipped for the digital era. By allowing local newspapers to move into new sectors like local television will help create jobs at a time of great uncertainty for local journalists."
