Bury South MP Ivan Lewis has backed calls for an overhaul of the expenses system.

In the wake of revelations that several MPs have made improper allowance claims, Mr Lewis believes the production of full receipts and independent auditing should be at the hub of the new system.

He stressed it was important that constituents have easy access to and full information surrounding claims made by their MPs.

He admitted rules governing the accommodation allowance had been “far too lax” and said the behaviour of some MPs had been “indefensible”.

He continued: “However, it is important that people are judged on the basis of facts and not partial reporting of their individual circumstances.”

Mr Lewis said he had nothing to hide and has volunteered to have his expenses scrutinised by newspapers.

He added: “I hope that my constituents will see I have behaved in accordance with the rules and try to do the right thing.”
