DAVID Chaytor has reacted to the result of an independent audit of MPs’ allowances revealed this week.

Sir Thomas Legg has written to the Bury North MP, who months ago was embroiled in a furore surrounding his expenses, saying he doesn’t need to supply further information or make a repayment.

Bury South MP Ivan Lewis has emerged virtually unscathed although he has been asked to clarify two aspects of his allowances.

Earlier this year, during a series of Daily Telegraph revelations into MPs’ expenses, it was alleged that Mr Chaytor wrongly claimed £12,925 in mortgage insurance payments on a London flat between 2005 and 2006. He apologised unreservedly and said the problem had been caused by an error.

But in June, following an internal inquiry, the Labour Party barred the MP from standing at the next General Election.

Their ruling came the same day as Mr Chaytor announced he was bringing the curtain down on his 12 year Parliamentary career.

This week, he was among 649 MPs who received a letter from former civil servant Sir Thomas, following his review into Parliamentary expenses covering the past five years.

The letters either cleared them of wrong-doing, ordered them to explain aspects of their claims or, in some cases, asked for money to be refunded.

A statement issued by the Bury North MP’s office said: “Along with all other MPs, Mr Chaytor has fully co-operated with Sir Thomas Legg’s audit of MPs’ expenses which took place over the summer.

“Sir Thomas has written to David confirming that he does not require him to supply any further information or make any repayment.

“David has always made it clear that any repayment he is asked to make, he will do so.”

Following his letter from Sir Thomas, Bury South MP Ivan Lewis said: “The auditor has asked for further information on a couple of points.

“One relates to the service charge on my London flat which is paid quarterly. He is querying whether the Fees Office inadvertently paid me for one quarter twice.

“Secondly, in order to complete the relevant paperwork, he has requested copies of annual mortgage statements in addition to the statements my office submits on a monthly basis.

“He has raised no other issues regarding my expenses claims.

“I will be providing the relevant information, as requested.”
